Head shot-1
Ann Jarrell
Math Tutor and Executive Function Specialist

Ann has been a mathematics educator and private tutor for 25 years.

She has tutored students with ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and Dyscalculia. She’s worked as an academic coach both in and out of school. At Bass Educational Services, Ann strives to continue her passion working one-on-one with adolescents who need extra in-person support, around their executive dysfunction, and thrive by using multiple modalities to learn.

Ann started out with a Theatre Arts Degree.  As a person who always loved math, she got her start tutoring math to theater students in college who thought differently, which sparked her interest in tutoring math for neurodiverse minds. After a few years of pursuing theater in Chicago, Ann returned to university to study mathematics and education and received her teaching certificate for grades 6-12 with both Mathematics and Theater Arts concentrations.

Shortly after beginning her career as a teacher, Ann’s husband joined the foreign service and they began to move to different countries around the world with their growing family. Ann’s youngest son was diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and a Language Disorder at the age of 4.  She has been his case worker / tutor for his entire academic career, learning the world of IEP’s and 504’s.  Ann homeschooled her son for grades 3 and 4 and tutored math to other students with learning differences while she helped her son return to school.  Her son is now 21, has taken some classes in Montgomery college and is training to enter the workforce.

Everywhere Ann went, she would tutor and was drawn to a clientele of students with special needs. As a math tutor, Ann has tutored 6th, 7th, 8th grade math, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, Precalculus, AP Calculus, and IB Standard Level Mathematics.

In 2019, Ann received a Master’s Certificate in Advanced IB Studies from George Mason University and re-entered the workforce as a teacher.  Her first job upon returning was as a Learning Support Associate where she pushed into the classroom and followed a cohort of grade 9 students with special needs to their classes.  Additionally, Ann taught a small group of middle schoolers who needed remediation with the goal of pushing them back into their regular mathematics classroom and co-designed and taught a special curriculum to students who struggled in mathematics at her school.

In Montgomery County, Ann has taught Algebra 1 in a Special Education inclusion classroom and Honors Geometry as an ESOL teacher where her knowledge of Spanish was an asset.  Ann’s passion has always been to help students discover ways that they learn and function best, advocate for themselves, and have confidence in their abilities.

When she’s not tutoring, you can find Ann with her family, working in her garden, and going to the movies.
